I know I have thought and/or said this every day this week but I think today might just be the day for Cookie. She has that look known to appear on every human mother’s face just before or at the nine month mark, that get-this-thing-out-of-me-yesterday expression. Hey, I’ve been there; I recognize it, empathize with it, and share it. I just might want the lamb(s) out of her almost as much as she does.
When a Shetland gives birth, it’s a little like Christmas (except you don’t have to decorate a tree unless you really feel compelled). Because of the many colors in a Shetland’s gene pool, you never know what’s going to pop out of there. It could be white, grey, light grey, bluish-grey, charcoal, steel grey, black, grayish brown, reddish brown, honey brown, light brown, and dark brown. And then there’s the question of how many, a singleton? Twins? Triplets? Add sex (as in ram or ewe, I swear (often) some of you people) and a myriad of possibilities presents itself. It’s very exciting, at least for a mostly house-bound, laundry-swamped pretend farmer like yours truly.
So here is Cookie, looking miserable, both because she is uncomfortable
and also because she suddenly realized that, yes, that is her butt.
When she is not dipping her nose in powdered sugar, Madeline, up until now Cookie’s one baby who is looking almost all grown up close to her first birthday, feels for her mother. She looks over her and loves her, knowing that no matter how many other babies come along, she was the first and no bouncing baby upstart can steal that position from her.
Yet, Cookie is not the sole beneficiary of Madeline’s affection. She craves love from us all, in fact, even the Pint-Sized Farmer that the others tend to avoid for lack of understanding. As you can see, Anthony likes Maddy just fine.
Yup, I think it’s true love, don’t you?
How about a close up, Mr. DeMille? Yes, that’s better. Love is all we need.
Awww, how sweet! Maddy sure has stayed dark, in spite of her sugarlips. What does her fleece look like down at skin level when you part it?
